Background of the Study

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) play a vital role in the economic development of Nigeria, contributing significantly to employment, income generation, and poverty alleviation. In Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State, SMBs are central to the local economy, with numerous enterprises in sectors such as agriculture, retail, and services. However, tax policies in Nigeria have often been criticized for being burdensome and complex, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In Zaria, tax policies such as Value Added Tax (VAT), corporate income tax, and the Personal Income Tax Act have been noted to affect the profitability and sustainability of SMBs (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). The Nigerian government has made efforts to simplify tax regulations and provide incentives for SMBs, but challenges persist in the local implementation of these policies. This study will examine how tax policies have impacted small and medium-sized businesses in Zaria, focusing on the challenges and opportunities presented by these policies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the role of SMBs in the local economy, the complexity and high rates of tax obligations have posed significant challenges to their growth and sustainability in Zaria Local Government. Many SMBs struggle with compliance due to inadequate knowledge of tax laws, inconsistent enforcement, and the financial burden of taxes (Salihu & Umar, 2024). This study will investigate the effects of tax policies on the operations of SMBs in Zaria and explore potential improvements to these policies that could benefit local businesses.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  2. To assess the challenges faced by SMBs in complying with tax policies in Zaria.

  3. To recommend policy changes that could foster a more favorable tax environment for SMBs in Zaria.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do tax policies affect the financial performance of small and medium-sized businesses in Zaria Local Government?

  2. What challenges do small and medium-sized businesses face in complying with tax policies in Zaria?

  3. What policy recommendations can be made to improve the tax environment for SMBs in Zaria?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Tax policies have a significant negative impact on the financial performance of small and medium-sized businesses in Zaria Local Government.

  2. Lack of proper tax education and awareness contributes to non-compliance among SMBs in Zaria.

  3. Simplifying tax policies and offering incentives will enhance the growth and sustainability of SMBs in Zaria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into how tax policies affect the growth and sustainability of small and medium-sized businesses in Zaria. The findings will assist policymakers in designing tax policies that better meet the needs of SMBs, ultimately fostering economic development and creating more employment opportunities in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on small and medium-sized businesses in Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State. Limitations include potential biases in business owner responses and the challenge of generalizing findings beyond the specific local government area.
