Background of the Study
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) play a vital role in the economic development of Nigeria, contributing significantly to employment, income generation, and poverty alleviation. In Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State, SMBs are central to the local economy, with numerous enterprises in sectors such as agriculture, retail, and services. However, tax policies in Nigeria have often been criticized for being burdensome and complex, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In Zaria, tax policies such as Value Added Tax (VAT), corporate income tax, and the Personal Income Tax Act have been noted to affect the profitability and sustainability of SMBs (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). The Nigerian government has made efforts to simplify tax regulations and provide incentives for SMBs, but challenges persist in the local implementation of these policies. This study will examine how tax policies have impacted small and medium-sized businesses in Zaria, focusing on the challenges and opportunities presented by these policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the role of SMBs in the local economy, the complexity and high rates of tax obligations have posed significant challenges to their growth and sustainability in Zaria Local Government. This study will investigate the effects of tax policies on the operations of SMBs in Zaria and explore potential improvements to these policies that could benefit local businesses.
